Seven important skills to beat the robots

I may be terribly naïve, but I don't think the robots will take over all of our jobs in the future.

If you've heard some of the scary predictions, you know that robots will doing all of our work – maybe even taking over the world. There's no doubt that robots will be able do to some of our work (they already are!), especially those jobs that don't require much thinking.

So what skills do we need to win at our careers and beat the future robots? I think we need to build on those skills that are uniquely human, such as:

  • Critical thinking
  • Communication
  • A positive attitude
  • A sense of humor
  • Resiliency
  • Empathy
  • Understanding

No matter what career field you enter, how can you use your human traits to become better at your job? For example, critical thinking or empathy enhance your job performance and add value to any service or function you perform. We need these traits to succeed in almost any job today and that will be ever truer with the robots in the picture.

Yes, there are even scarier predictions that robots are beginning to take on some of these traits – even that some of us will be half human/half robot in the future. Not being an expert in the field of robotic science, I don't want to say those predictions are wrong. After all, the robots may be a good thing – especially as they take over the grunt work. We can then focus on improving those traits that make us human.
