The Department of Education will be catching up on its correspondence with students and parents in 2018. In a Jan. 5 Electronic Announcement, the Department of Education's Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) announced they will remind students and parents about the renewal FAFSA, the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) and the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. FSA will send FAFSA renewal reminders in the next few weeks to students and parents who filed a 2017-18 FAFSA but have not yet filed at 2018-19 FAFSA. Students and parents who did not use the IRS DRT on the 2018-19 FAFSA will receive an email, encouraging them to return to fafsa.gov and submit a corrected FAFSA, using the DRT. Finally, low-income students and parents will receive an email reminding them to take advantage of the IRS VITA program where they can receive help completing a tax return with an IRS-certified volunteer. The Electronic Announcement includes sample emails and invites schools to use the language in those sample emails in their own communications with students. | ||||||||||||||||
