With greater knowledge comes greater understanding of personal finance and better money habits.

That was one of the messages last week at the Annual Conference on Financial Education, presented by the Institute for Financial Literacy. Mapping Your Future participated in the conference and was among the presenters, providing a discussion about student loan comments on social media.

During the three-day conference, presenters and attendees discussed some of the latest techniques in the classroom and beyond to help students learn how to manage money before they have to make financial decisions that will impact the rest of their lives.

Cathy Mueller, executive director of Mapping Your Future provided a presentation on what borrowers are tweeting about student loans. Entitled, "Tweeting about #College, #Money, and #StudentLoans," the presentation reviewed a couple of projects in which those tweets over a short period of time were analyzed to look for any common themes.

This discovery research indicated that both borrowers and organizations are tweeting about student loans. A couple of important themes that were found is while there are a number of organizations tweeting possible student loan solutions, borrowers need to be aware of possible scams. In addition, some borrowers and others questioned the value of higher education with respect to the amount of student loan debt they now have.
