Students who do well in school know there’s a strategy that helps them make good grades, earn more awards, and, overall, enjoy the learning experience.

The secret strategy, which one that any student can use, is being engaged in your classes and activities. Simply paying attention and participating in school contributes untold value to your education and to your life.

Not every subject will be of interest to you, but every subject is of value. Whether you are a high school student or a college student, the classes you take will contribute to your knowledge and understanding of the world around you.

There are specific steps you can take to be engaged:

  • Attend class. When you miss a class, you miss a lot of added information that may not be in the textbooks.
  • Sit near the front of the classroom. It lessens the distractions.
  • Join in class discussions. Discussions, in which thoughts and questions are shared, enhance your ability to learn material.
  • Ask questions. Questions can lead to valuable and insightful discussions on a topic. You may find yourself interested in something that you thought wasn’t of interest.
  • Talk to the teacher. Teachers and professors find that students who get to know them often do the best in the class. It may be those students are more engaged anyway, but it may also be that the educator shares important information and assistance with the students who engage with them and ask for help.
  • Keep up with class assignments. Granted, sometimes the amount of homework and projects can seem overwhelming. However, if you work a little bit every day on your classes, it will keep you from falling behind and from disengaging in your classes.

Engagement is your education is much like any habit. Practice every day and beyond being a successful student, and you will reap rewards throughout your life.
