For students, entering the federal school code of a college or university may not be the most common way of listing  an institution on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form.

Still, it can be done.

Rather than entering the name of the institution, students can enter the institution’s federal school code. While most institutions publish their school code on their website, students can use the 2022–23 Federal School Code (FSC) List of Participating Schools. The U.S. Department of Education recently announced the availability of the updated list.

The Federal School Code List contains the unique codes assigned by the Department of Education for schools participating in the Title IV federal student aid programs. Students can enter these codes on the FAFSA to indicate which postsecondary schools will receive the processed application results.

In an October 31 Electronic Announcement, the Department of Education reminds postsecondary institutions to keep their name and address information current. In the announcement, the Department said if an institution’s name or address has changed, an “Update” application must be submitted through the Electronic Application for Approval to Participate in the Federal Student Financial Aid Programs (E-App), located at https://eligcert.ed.gov. This information will then be used to update the Federal School Code List of Participating Schools.
