A new perspective

Bicycles don't have doors.

This observation was one of many that my then 3-year-old daughter made as she was learning about the world.

I had to agree – bicycles don't have doors. I had never really looked at bicycles that way before. Now, thanks to my daughter, I gained a new perspective.

That got me to thinking, what other ways was I so set in my thinking that I was missing out on a new perspective? Especially in trying to understand the turbulent issues of current times.

As a newspaper and radio reporter, I interviewed people on both sides of an issue and what I found in those interviews is that, in many cases, both sides had a valid point. I also learned that no matter how I felt personally about an issue, it was important for me to be open to the opinions of others and to gather as much information as possible from different sources before making up my mind.

While we may not all agree, we should enjoy learning from the perspective of others. That new perspective can serve as a creative spark or help in finding solutions.

Maybe that new perspective could come from the most unlikely of sources. It's amazing how a 3-year old can say something so insightful that it can change the way you think.

Of course, that wasn't true with every one of her observations – some were questionable.

She also told me that sheep don't have tails.
