Higher education, no question, will be impacted by the pandemic for years to come. As beneficiaries of higher education, it is the students, especially those with financial need, who are likely to feel much of that impact.

The Department of Education on Tuesday provided information about the emergency grants under the American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act for postsecondary education. According to the announcement from the Department, the grants will help more than 5,000 higher education institutions provide emergency financial aid to millions of students.

The Department said the funding should be used in ways to have the greatest impact on students and communities, such as:

  • Issuance of emergency financial grants to support students with exceptional need
  • Retention and reengagement of students
  • Prevention and mitigation of the spread of COVID-19

As a part of the announcement, the Department released a 28-page FAQ document to provide guidance to institutions on allowable uses of the funds.
