Doing something important

For me, it was being told I was needed that made the difference.

It was the message which inspired me to volunteer at the local nature center. I am not a naturalist, but I could support the organization in other ways, I was told.

I helped with fundraisers, wrote articles, took photos, and did other tasks for the organization. Whether these humble tasks contributed a great deal to the organization, I can't say for sure. But I was having fun, meeting new people, and spending time on a cause which I supported.

Like so many volunteers, what I learned is that in helping others, I was really helping myself.

And that made all the difference to me.

Happy National Volunteer Week!
