Three new FAFSA questions to answer - or not answer - this year

It’s strictly voluntary this year.
Students who don’t mind answering a few extra questions will have the opportunity to do so when they submit their 2023-24 Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA).
The U.S. Department of Education has added a new demographic survey to the “Sign and Submit” section of the FAFSA. Students will now be asked to provide their gender, race, and ethnicity prior to submitting the FAFSA application. The questions will not display when a student submits corrections to the FAFSA.
According to the Department, the demographic questions are being asked on the 2023-24 FAFSA in a pilot, voluntary survey format in order to collect specific feedback on the new questions. This feedback will provide insight on the development of the questions for full implementation within the FAFSA form for the 2024-25 award year.
The Department of Education is soliciting comments on the survey questions, which can be submitted with the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB). All comments on the survey will be public record.
