In the first of its promised updates, the Department of Education this week announced changes to its draft of the 2024-25 FAFSA Specifications Guide.

In a May 31 Electronic Announcement, the Department said with this May 2023 update it made several changes to the guide, including updating Volume 4 – Record Layouts and Processing Codes, adding a standalone draft ISIR record layout in Excel format, adding Volume 5 – Edits and Rejects, and adding Volume 6 – ISIR Guide. The Department noted that the Introduction is unchanged.

The draft specifications guide will give financial aid administrators, software vendors, and other vested stakeholders time to understand and prepare for upcoming changes under FAFSA Simplification.

According to the Department, the FAFSA Simplification Act represents a significant overhaul of federal student aid, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form, need analysis, and many policies and procedures for schools that participate in the Title IV programs.
