An important trait needed by today's high school and college students

If we ever needed any proof that the future is uncertain, 2020 has at least given us that evidence.

However, for high school and college students just now embarking on their future, the uncertainty seems to have been particularly cruel. Students today are being thrown some huge challenges - just as they embark on their adult lives.

Those students that persevere and succeed despite the challenges that 2020 brings will have a common trait: resilience - the ability to recover quickly from any difficulties they face.

People who are resilient understand that they can't control everything around them, but they can control how they react. However, it's not easy and it takes practice to develop a habit of resiliency.

A key step for students is to focus on their goals and the steps needed to accomplish those goals. For example, students who persevere know that their lives have meaning and purpose and pursuing their goals is part of fulfilling that purpose.

Students with resiliency take care of themselves - both mentally and physically. They do that by exercising, eating right, and getting plenty of sleep. When faced with a stressful situation, they mediate, seek help from a counselor, or talk to a family member or mentor.

This generation of high school and college students - who are learning now how to be resilient - may be better prepared to handle the future - both despite and because of the uncertainty they have faced in 2020.
